Sandblasting is an established technique used by ceramic and glass artists for linear and textural surface designs.
I begin with a finished pot (a glazed and fired piece), masking tape, a pencil, and a very sharp X-Acto knife. The first step is to completely cover the outside surface of the pot with masking tape. I then draw the design elements on the tape. Next, following my pencil lines with the X-Acto knife I cut and remove sections of the tape, exposing the glazed pot. The remaining tape will act as a resist protecting the glaze from the sandblasting. I lightly sandblast the exposed areas of the pot, then, I remove all the masking tape revealing the finished design.
